Are you hungry in the mornings?

FullSizeRender-8

My body doesn’t react very well to late dinners. My stomach needs some time to digest. Normally I eat about 3-4 hours before going to bed. This is a good time to allow my body to digest everything and letting it focus on going to sleep.

Yesterday all our meals were shifted and dinner ended up being very late. I could have delayed my bedtime, but as I have small children I was not going to do that – you never know when I have to get up again… but this meant that I went to bed while still digesting.

Not only is the body busy digesting and can therefore not rest properly, but the body is also horizontal, which doesn’t exactly help the food go downward.

All night I felt like the potatoes were coming up again – sorry for the colorful image.

As a result, this morning I was not hungry (nor rested). So what is the best thing to do?

Skip breakfast?

It’s the most important meal a day!

If I skip it I will feel hungry before lunch! But if I eat something I will feel extremely full and uncomfortable.

So what should I do?

I think it’s important to feel hungry in the morning. It’s a good tell-tale sign that you have eaten the right amount of food the day before. And you can start your day feeling great and energetic after hydrating and feeding yourself a healthy breakfast. This also increases your chances of making healthy food choices for the rest of the day.

But life is not perfect and sometimes we slip. Like I did yesterday. This morning, instead of having my normal breakfast, I settled for a small yoghurt. A little later I was hungry again, so I had an apple. This should balance my blood sugar until lunch and then I am back on track for the rest of the day.

Are you hungry when you wake up? If not, have you ever considered it may be because you eat too late?
