6 ways to stay healthy on vacation

The official summer months have started and this is the perfect occasion to take a break from our every day life. Whether you are going away for the weekend or taking some time off at the beach, it can be hard to stick to your healthy habits when you are away from home.

Travelling is a great way to relax, recharge your batteries or to change your mind set for a few days or weeks, but it can be tough to find healthy foods or stay on track. Here are some easy ways to help you on your way.

Prepare for the airport

Try to avoid airport food, as it can be hard to find something healthy. Make sure to pack some healthy snacks like fresh fruit or veggies and raw nuts. If you have to eat at the airport, make sure you look for real food, something where you recognise the food. Look for bananas or plain Greek yogurt, but stay away from premade parfaits, which can be loaded with sugar and additives.

Get moving

Being on vacation doesn’t mean you should take vacation from your workout routines. You may not be ablet o do your regular workouts, but make sure you do something. Set yourself up for success by packing gym clothes (wearing your sneakers on the plane is a great space saver!) and book a hotel with a gym or pool. Remember to stay active even if you’re not taking part in traditional workouts; stay active by exploring by foot or bike.

Indulge in moderation

You deserve to enjoy yourself on vacation and that includes treating yourself! Be mindful of your indulgences and try to limit them. If you know you’ll be stopping at your favourite bakery one afternoon, keep the rest of your meals healthy and clean that day. Make sure you start every morning with a healthy, filling breakfast with quality protein, healthy fats, and fibre.

Do your research

Before your trip, research the healthy hot spots at your destination. Visit farmer’s markets for fresh produce, find restaurants with healthy, seasonal dishes, and talk to locals to find the best hidden gems. If you have access to a kitchen while on vacation, pick up some local produce and cook one evening instead of eating out.

Drink mindfully

It’s always happy hour when you’re on vacation, right? Be aware of sneaky calories and sugar in cocktails. Enjoy your time off by sticking with simple drinks that use fresh ingredients. And don’t forget to hydrate while you’re away! Bringing a reusable water bottle is a great way to make sure you get your H2O each day.

Say no to work

Actually allow yourself to unplug on vacation. Make an effort to not check your work emails or even consider removing your work email from your phone while away. If you absolutely need to check in, set aside an allotted time to do so.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself on and after vacation. Don’t beat yourself up for straying from your normal habits or enjoying that second scoop of ice cream. Ease back into your routine when returning from vacation and remember, each day is a new opportunity to be your happiest, healthiest self.
